Five Women From the Past

Ah, what a discussion we had about the five women who must have been a part of a changing time. We talked of the Neo-urban Culture in the 1960s, international Fashion Icon Jacqueline Kennedy, the 'dream' of 'modernist' architecture of Dhaka in the 60s, the imposition of 'Americanism' on Dacca's emerging elites, and then I drifted into a most unexpected discussion of Panopticon.

Welcome to the world of New-historicism!

I did NOT originally intend to discuss Panopticon in this class. However, circumstances forced me to talk about it. We also talked about 1982 British Play "Top Girls" written by Cheryl Churchill. We talked about the general theme of the play and very slightly considered the possibility of producing the play.
Disappointment: Students are generally unwilling to speak out their mind in the class and engage with the teacher BUT they are very interested to talk in hushed voice among themselves.

Our Works Done in Class Yesterday

Yesterday (Monday), we did a couple of regular items.

1. First, there was a small lecture on the structure of "periodic sentence". I gave a few examples from Kate Chopin's novel "Awakening", where the writer writes a very long sentence with multiple explanatory additions after each segment. Those segments are also marked with COMMA. 
2. "Awakening" was later handed over to Sadia, who will probably read the book. I also learned from her that she started "God of Small Things" several times but could not finish. I think this is one issue I want to pick up right after the Mid-term is over - the issue of not being able 
   to finish a LONG Reading.
3. Later, we worked on a small writing sample based on Chart/Grid/Graph. This type of writing was first introduced in class IX-X English Book. However, it was also commented that such writings are TOO primary to be included in an Advanced Level course. 
4. Finally, we worked on the remaining areas of Vocabulary. I found many of the students did NOT bring 100 Words Page, which was earlier distributed. I will again work on this next day, which is tomorrow. 
5. After the class I had a short meeting with a couple of students and we discussed the possibility of launching the proposed Magazine/Journal so as to improve English Reading and Writing. We also discussed the options for starting the Business Theatre Project.   

What Did we Do in Class and OUT of Class (Yesterday)

We did a good number of Vocabulary and introduced ourselves with DOK (Depth of Knowledge). Afterwards, I had my first full meeting with the Wrodsmith Group (শব্দচর্চা গোষ্ঠী), who were quite helpful for me to understand what their language-related issues are. We had a lot of talk about our work-pattern, our goals, our working resources etc. I hope, I will be able to post all the content of our discussion by today.

I have also assigned one student to "hunt" down potential writers for the forthcoming Magazine/Journal.

4 People on the Stage

Today I was happy to send a total of 4 students on the stage and they showed good interaction with the rest of the class. I also asked Faisal, who is often so busy with his buddies discussing important matters, to help me out in practicing VOCABULARY. I handed out one 1 set of Vocabulary page for 1 pair of students. The ideas is, each will help the other to read and remember the words. The word list given today is really COMPREHENSIVE and can make you forget that you do NOT have a strong vocabulary. I also asked Saikat Dev Nath and Saad to read out part of the Course-description that I am currently working on. They did a great job! Finally, I also asked Marwa Kazi to read out the methods of getting rid of social media. She initially denied having the moral authority to do so because she is probably one of those who are forever glued to the social media. I hope if some of you become aware of the use-lessness and use-fullness of social media, you will have a HUGE amount of time left to you. Finally, I and Fahad (my guidance counselor) singled out 10 people who misunderstood the 2000-word assignment and I advised them to come up with the challenge of completing the task.  As a compensation to help them out to face the challenge with optimism, I have reduced the word-limit to 1000 for these 10 students only. [মাত্র কয়েকটা কথা লিখলাম, এতেই ২৫০ শব্দ হয়ে গেল!]

A Letter to Guddu (The Tempest and other Things)

So,
Wrote a letter Guddu to me one day. And he spoke of a Novel (উপন্যাস) by Shakespeare. But you see Shakespeare did never write a Novel. Since Guddu even send me the title of the Novel, I checked it out and discovered it to be a Play! (নাটক)! So much thanks go to Guddu for sending me this request.
